Bill

Bill

Known by many a name. "Billy Skipper", "Old Man o' the Sea", "Boss" are among just a few. Bill is the owner, builder, former skipper and maintainer of "Swagman". He is so in tune with the boat that it is sometimes very, very spooky. Although, it is quite understandable with the amount of hours he has spent building, sailing and maintaining her. Bill is now receding from the lime light of sailing "Swagman" and handing over the running and skippering of the boat to Andrew. However, he will continue to maintain her and control the overall strategic direction of how "Swagman" is used.

Andrew

Andrew

Andrew, or Drew to his close friends, is Bill's eldest son, and creator of this website. He generally does all of the organising for the boat nowadays, and as stated above is now the prime skipper. Andrew is starting to include his young son Brett whenever possible in the hope of seeding a new crop of crew. Season 2005/2006 will be Andrew's first full season of skippering "Swagman", although he has skippered the boat in a number of full regatta series. Over the years Andrew has revolved right through all of the crew positions, becoming extremely proficient in most, especially his beloved foredeck. Therefore, it will be very difficult for him to be stuck on the 'piece of wood' (tiller) and not able to cross the demarcation line (mast line) and work on the foredeck.

Simon

Simon

Simon has been sailing on "Swagman" since the early 80's, and is one of the mainstays of the boat. He has contributed greatly, both personally and financially, to the success of the boat. These days he tries to sail on "Swagman" as often as possible, although he is heavily constrained by his many business ventures. We have been extremely appreciative of Simon for his overall contribution and loyalty to "Swagman" over the years, and he knows he is always welcome. In recent years Simon has been main hand, tactician and spinnaker hand, while the rest of the younger ones run around the boat madly doing things.

Ingmar

Ingmar has been on and off the crew since about 2002, however recently we have been trying to poach him from his original smaller boat "Chelsea" to become a permanent member of "Swagman's" crew. During the 2004/2005 season Ingmar only crewed part-time while he was building his house in the Perth hills. Ingmar is our primary forwardhand and we hope that he can become more of an integral part of the crew.

Brad

Brad joined the crew in the 2004/2005 season, and is making a valuable contribution to the "Swagman" crew. Between his other obligations of Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade member and his busy younger lifestyle, he has committed to sail on "Swagman" as much as possible. Brad is still learning the ropes, and is now our primary jib hand and we look forward to his continued association with "Swagman".

Brett

Brett

Brett started sailing on "Swagman" late in 2003. Being only 11 years old at that stage he was very apprehensive with the heavy weather and the urgent comings and goings. However, this quickly disappeared as he became used to the sounds and happenings of competitive sailing. In some ways he believes he was thrown in at the deep in (but not literally yet). Brett has only been able to sail every second week, however wants to try to sail more often. Although sometimes the pressures of spending time with his school mates takes over. He currently is the 'sewer rat' (pulling the spinnaker in and other gopher type jobs). His extra pair of hands are always invaluable to hang on to the end of a rope, or do something while everybody else is busy, and we miss that when he is not around. The medium term hope is for Brett to become another jib hand, and get a better understanding of the skills of sailing.
